Palm seems to have tipped their own hand by accidently leaking a presentation that introduces the upcoming Palm Treo Pro, or Treo 850, as it is known.
The presentation was said to have been available on Palm’s own Web site in a learning area that seems to have been created as an introduction to the upcoming announcement of the device.
The Treo Pro/850 is a Windows Mobile 6.1 smart phone that is targeted to be an upgraded and more powerful version in many ways than the current Centro that has been very successful for Palm recently. At least initially it will be available in GSM with a CDMA version to come later.
The slick looking black/gunmetal finish is a bit of a departure from the flashy colors that the Centro has been offered in. The Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional that will power the phone will perhaps not be the only variant, as it is widely believed that Palm will introduce a version that runs the Palm OS at some point in the future.
The feature set of the phone offers much of what has been suspected, including a 3.5mm headphone jack, a dedicated WiFi button to control the 802.11G wireless access that the phone offers, as well as a micro USB jack which is a departure from the proprietary jacks that Palm has employed in the past.
It appears to be a bit bigger than the Centro with a little larger screen, and the keyboard, which was quite small on the Centro, looks it be a fraction bigger as well. We also suspect that it will include a higher resolution camera than the Centro.
Palm continues to struggle, but has made up some ground as of late with the introduction of the Centro, which has filled a low-end niche for those looking to move to a smart phone with BlackBerry or iPhone-style features without the large cost that is associated with these higher-end models.
RIM, on the other hand, has started to combat this with many of the old BlackBerry devices being available at little or no cost with a 2-year agreement.
