Micron expects DRAM prices to rise

by on11 October 2013

Not by much

Micron Technology expects DRAM memory chip average selling prices to rise by a mid-single digit percentage in the its fiscal first quarter compared with its fourth quarter ending in August, executives said on a conference call with analysts on Thursday.

Although this is not much, it does represent an improvement for this particular market which has been as turbulent as a river full of piranhas lately. The company expects NAND average selling prices to decline by a high single-digit percentage in its first quarter. All up this could be a sign that particularly industry has stablised and on track to making some serious gains again.

The supply for DRAM was shortened after a fire at SK Hynix's fabrication plant in China, and that pushed up prices a little in the last quarter. However, any improvements in the industry caused by the fire have long since vanished and this increase is a real one.
