A new joint venture between Intel and STMicroelectronics has just launched under the rather peculiar name of Numonyx, although we missed the official company launch which was on the 31st of March. Nonetheless, this new company looks like it will be a major player in the flash memory market.

Numonyx will focus on non-volatile memory, such as NAND, NOR and PCM (phase-change memory), but will also be dabbling with some RAM products. The company is currently producing a lot of NOR-based product based on 65nm, but is expecting to move to 45nm before the end of the year.

Numonyx has its headquarters in Switzerland and has some 7,000 employees spread across the globe in facilities located in the US, China, Israel, Italy, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. The company has six 8-inch wafer production plants and three 12-inch fabs.
