Google’s software platform for wearables may be receiving its first major update on February 9th, according to the latest information from at least one known reliable Twitter source who does his job fairly well.

Mobile device information leaker Evan Blass, also known as EVLeaks on Twitter, wrote on Monday that he expects Android Wear 2.0 will launch in just over three weeks. The launch will be complemented by the release of two new flagship smartwatches based on the second major release of the Android Wear platform.

LG Sport and LG Watch Style

Back in December, we wrote that Google has been planning to release two new flagship smartwatches in Q1 2017, but the model names and specs of the devices were not known at the time. The latest report now says they will be made by LG under the names LG Sport and LG Watch Style.

The LG Watch Sport will include a 480x480 display in a package measuring 14.2mm thick (1.38-inches) running Android Wear 2.0. The device has 768MB of onboard RAM, 4GB of storage and will include a 430mAh battery. It will also include an optical heart-rate sensor, LTE modem, GPS module, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE and will be IP68 water resistant.

The LG Watch Style will include a 360x360 display in a package measuring 10.8mm thick (1.2-inches) running Android Wear 2.0. The device has 512MB of onboard RAM, 4GB of storage and will include a 240mAh battery. It will also include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE and will be IP67 water resistant.

While the Android Wear OS only accounted for about 17 percent of global  smartwatch shipments in 2015, the number quickly grew to about 25 percent in 2016, even though the overall wearables market is headed for a decline this year, at least in the US.  An IDC research report from March 2016 projects that smartwatches including the Apple Watch and Android Wear devices will grow to about one-third of the overall market by 2020, as more users become inclined to monitoring day-to-day activities.

18 smartwatches get Android Wear 2.0 update this year

Additionally, Blass posted a list of 18 existing Android devices that will be updated to Wear 2.0 over the course of the year. They include the Moto 360 (2nd-gen), Moto 360 Sport, LG Watch Urbane (2nd-gen) LTE, LG Watch Urbane (1st-gen), LG G Watch R, Polar M600, Casio Smart Outdoor Watch, Nixon Mission, Tag Heuer Connected, Fossil Q Wander, Fossil Q Marshall, Fossil Q Founder, and the Michael Kors Access Bradshaw Smartwatch.
