Samsung lets Android rivals use its watch

Wants wider adoption

Samsung to make its Tizin smartwatch work with competitors' Android smartphones.

The watch will be available as of October, it told an event in Berlin tied to the IFA.

The idea is to make new smartwatches compatible with smartphones made by competitors and to help Samsung sales. It is an interesting idea and the total opposite of the walled garden model touted by Apple.

The watch market is yet to do anything interesting. It received a boost from Apple's marketing, but as people realised how pointless it was they stopped buying.

Younghee Lee, Samsung's global marketing head for mobile said his company was "leading the way in this segment. But we realise we can't do it alone."

Samsung launched its new watch earlier this week. The Gear S2 comes with Samsung's mobile payment technology.
