Roundup: Reviews show a fast but expensive and bulky card

Nvidia has officially lifted the review and sale embargo on the Geforce RTX 4080 graphics card, which should now be available for $1,199. Reviews have been published, showing a pretty fast graphics card, which is plagued by similar issues as the RTX 4090.

The one and only Geforce RTX 4080, just as it should be

The Geforce RTX 4080 is based on the 4nm AD103 GPU, featuring 7 Graphics Processing Clusters (GPCs), 48 Texture Processing Clusters (TPCs), and 76 Streaming Multiprocessors (SMs). This adds up to 9,728 CUDA cores, 76 RT cores, and 304 4th-generation Tensor cores. It has 112 ROPs, 304 Texture Units, and packs 16GB of 22.4Gbps GDDR6X memory on a 256-bit memory interface, adding up to 716.8GB/s of memory bandwidth. It comes with 9,728KB of L1 and 65,536KB of L2 cache.

This is the only Geforce RTX 4080 on the market, at least for now, as Nvidia has decided to cancel the Geforce RTX 4080 12GB, based on AD104 GPU. As you probably know, this one is rumored to launch as the RTX 4070 Ti on January 5th, with a special unveiling on January 3rd and reviews showing up on January 4th.

Most reviews online agree that the Geforce RTX 4080 is indeed a fast graphics card with impressive RT performance improvements, DLSS 3 improvements, as well as rather good energy efficiency and low temperatures across the board.

It has a great design, at least when it comes to Founders Edition as well as some custom versions that will come soon, but it is also a rather bulky card.

Performance-wise, you are looking at a card that is anywhere between 5 and 15 percent faster than the RTX 3090 Ti, and about 5 to 20 percent slower than the RTX 4090, which is not bad considering it is $400 cheaper than the RTX 4090.

Unfortunately, the RTX 4080 is quite an expensive graphics card, especially considering the previous generation xx80 series cards, the RTX 3080 and the 3080 Ti. AMD's upcoming RDNA 3-based RX 7000 series graphics card are just around the corner, so it would be wise to wait it out, at least for a bit.
