Radeon HD 7970 volume shipments in January

by on15 December 2011

2048 stream processors can beat GTX 580

AMD is getting ready to launch its next Radeon HD 7000 generation, and the latest information we are getting indicates that it the cards launch at CES, most likely January 9th or 10th  and volume production and availability are expected the same month.

Currently our sources are saying volume shipment should be expected in January, which might very well mean that it should be available immediately at launch.

The chip is 365 square millimeters in size and performance wise it should end up faster than Geforce GTX 580. This doesn’t come as a surprise as Radeon HD 7970 has 2048 stream processors and 128 TMUs. We also heard that it has 2 tessellation units per core, which should boost tessellation performance to impressive levels, but still we don't know what Nvidia has in store for Kepler, its 28nm competitor.

We are sure that AMD will ship Radeon HD 7970 long before Nvidia ships any desktop 28nm Kepler parts, Geforce 600 series if you insist, but we still don’t know which one will end up faster.
