Beefy and ready for overclocking

Asus' has officially showed its upcoming HD 5870 Matrix card, an overclocking friendly beast made exclusively for overclocking enthusiasts.

Although it was showcased at CeBIT, next to the upcoming dual-GPU HD 5970 Ares, there were no details about the specifications or the details behind the massive heatsink on the HD 5870 Matrix.

The HD 5870 Matrix should end up clocked at around 900MHz for the core and it will have 2GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 4800MHz. As you can see from the pictures below, it has a total of 16 GDDR5 chips, eight on the front side and eight on the back of the PCB. The back also features a backplate that should help cool those eight memory chips.

The card features two 8-pin PCI-Express connectors, and although it shouldn't have a higher power consumption when compared to the reference card, it looks like Asus wants to be sure that these overclocking beasts have enough power for those that will push them even further.

The new HD 5870 Matrix also features a 8+2 VRM and has voltage check points that should come in handy for those that don't trust software monitoring .

The cooler has a total of five direct contact heatpipes connected to the massive aluminium heatsink which is cooled by a quite large looking blower fan. The backplate ended up with DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs as well as the Safe Boot button.

The card sports an R.O.G. look and the big LED Matrix logo will certainly add to overall look, if you happen to have a case with window. Unfortunately, Asus didn't announce the price or the availability date, but we will certainly keep a close eye on this one.
