Better chipset than Intel’s

In last
week’s conference call, Nvidia CEO, Jen Hsun Huang more popularly known as just Jensen, has told the financial community that Atom is something that will need a great chipset such as Ion. He believes the 945G is simply not good enough and that his chipset is better.

Jensen said that Nvidia traditionally did great in the upper part of mid level market all the way to high end, and Netbook and Ion are a big opportunity for Nvidia in entry level, as many people will buy Netbook as a cheap alternative to a big notebook. The price will be the key factor of this affection, especially in these financially troubled times.

Jensen believes that Ion is the answer for all the people who want a netbook, as if you get an ION based netbook, you will be able to play Blu-ray, even you cannot fit the drive in 10.2 inch format, you can play H.264 at 1080p, the top resolution.

Netbook will do good as a cheap alternative in difficult times, but Jensen failed to mention that Geforce 9400 core inside of that chipset will offer you possibility to do some basic gaming. Naturally, Jensen talked about faster Photoshop on netbook via Cuda.

Nvidia believes that they will do well with Ion and it expects many design wins in second half of the year but Jensen didn’t mention how much more will you need to pay on top of current Atom platforms to get the Blu-ray. Intel can at least be cheaper with its Menlow platform.
