An action of a desperate man

We spoke with quite a few partners and they were anything but impressed with new GTX 260. The new card with 216 Shaders is naturally a bit faster from the old GTX 260, but this is again not as much as partners or people where hoping.

Everyone hopes that there is a new GTX 280 with 55nm process and from all what we have heard before there should be such a product in Q4 2008.

This is the product that might win some balance on Nvidia’s side as this new chip has a hope to win against Radeon HD 4870 X2, a current performance leader.

Nvidia’s current portfolio is a big mess of renamed and rebranded products and you can clearly see that the company is shaken by ATI’s strong return, but the new chips are not coming over night; it takes quite some time to make a new chip that might win the performance crown back.

The new GTX 260 with more Shaders is definitely not the situation saver, especially due to the fact that there is not any fixed branding guideline and you can call your new GTX 260 however you like. Now that will certainly confuse the super confused market even more.

There might be an easy distinction between an old GTX 260 and the new one, as the new one will have to be more expensive. So when you walk in the store simply ask for the most expensive GTX 260 and you should end up with the faster one.
