EA to be new Star Wars video game home

by on07 May 2013

BioWare, DICE, and Visceral to make Star Wars titles

If we told you we saw this coming from a mile away a year ago, you would have laughed at the suggestion. Electronic Arts has reached an agreement with Disney making EA the new home to Star Wars video games. The new deal allows EA to develop and publish Star Wars video games for the video game console systems as well as the PC. Disney has retained the rights to develop mobile, social, and online Star Wars titles.

The news comes with confirmation that at least three EA studios have Star Wars titles in development. BioWare, DICE, and Visceral will all be developing Star Wars titles. While the titles were not announced, it was confirmed that all of the titles would use the DICE-developed Frostbite 3 engine to power them. It is unknown if any of the Lucas Arts projects have been transferred to EA as part of the deal, but we doubt it.

If we were to guess, we would suggest that BioWare will develop a new Knight of the Old Republic title and DICE would be the perfect developer for a new Star Wars Battlefront title. Visceral is the real wild card, as we suspect that it could be developing just about anything.

Expect to hear some specifics about what EA has planned for the Star Wars video game universe at their press conference during E3. This kind of news is just too good for them to sit on till next year, but we suspect that the actual release of new Star Wars titles from EA could be still be a long way off.
