Since the PCI-Express 4.0 is due to get its final specification later this year, we had some information including the fact that it will double the bandwidth from current 8GT/s on the PCI-Express 3.0 to 16GT/s, as well as a rather eyebrow-raising information that it could provide up to 300W of power directly from the slot.

The PCI-SIG reached out to Tomshardware.com, which got the original story slightly wrong, clarifying that the slot will still provide 75W, while the 225W can be gained from supplemental power connectors. Even if the slot would provide 300W, motherboard makers would have needed a way to deliver that much power to the slot, which means that the motherboard would need additional power connectors and, in the end, it would just somewhat make the cable management a bit easier.

In any case, it appears that PCI-Express 4.0 won't be getting additional power output but rather just double the bandwidth as expected earlier.
