Sweeteners being drawn up

The Indian government has developed a semiconductor policy in a bid to try and get Intel back to the negotiating table.

The government had wanted Intel to build new fabs in the country, but the chipmaker said it was not interested unless the policy was developed.
What it means is that the country didn't have any sweeteners or assistance packages to encourage it to build any processing plants.

The Union minister for Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, has said with the semiconductor policy in place, he would be able to attract investment worth Rs 24,000 crore or even more in this sector in the next two-three years.

By March 31, 2010, India will house two-three semi-conductor fabs each with an investment of $2-3billion, he promised.
