Projected to air 85 3D events in first year

ESPN has announced that they will be joining the first networks to add a 3D channel, with the addition of ESPN 3D that will arrive later this year.

As we have already told you, CES this year will be all abuzz with the addition of 3D HD technology that is said to be the next big thing in home entertainment. The announcement by ESPN came with very few details beyond the fact that they are projecting to air at least 85 events in 3D the first year.

The decision to jump on the 3D band wagon will not come cheap for ESPN, as they will have to employ a second production/broadcast crew as well as separate 3D cameras to broadcast the action in 3D. Planned events include the Summer X Games, NBA games, soccer, college basketball and college football.

The network is expected to officially launch on June 11th, but no details were available as to which cable and satellite providers will be adding the channel. Our sources suggest that DirecTV actually might be the one in the best position to add it first with the recent deployment of their latest satellite, as well as their already announced 3D HD channel and the fact that the majority of their recent HD satellite receivers can support 3D with a firmware upgrade. Of course, you will still have to provide a 3D TV set to enjoy the 3D content, and those are also expected to arrive as early as the May or June timeframe.
