LG Display has unveiled an e-book reader that is equipped with in-house developed thin-film solar cell. The cell means that the ebook is .7mm in thickness and weighs 20 grams.

It is thinner than a credit card and about the same weight of a fountain pen, the company said. It also 10cm in width and length, and it was developed to fit the 6-inch display panel for the e-book readers currently mass produced by LG Display.

The thin-film solar cell is produced by placing electrodes onto a glass or plastic substrate. The solar cell is about 9.6 per cent efficient. What you would need to do is expose it to sunlight for four or five hours and it will last a day without additional charging.

The gear is still in the prototype phase so there is no word on price yet.
