HP in advertising hot water
Smoke and Mirrors
Printer manufacturer Kyocera has complained to the Advertising Standards Authority over a recent HP colour laser printer advertisment.
Ads for the HP Colour LaserJet CP3505 claimed that all customers need to replace are the toner cartridges and there is no need to pay for an expensive printing drum replaced.
Kyocera's complaint is that the printer's drum is built into the cartridge and is therefore factored into the cost.
In a statement Kyocera UK a spokesman said the advertising was typical of the 'smoke and mirrors' tactics that obscured the short-life, high-waste nature of HP's technology and the consequent costs that will be passed on to users.
The adverts also claim that the cost per page of HP's printer is 60 per cent less than that of Kyocera's own products which also does not quite work out either.
