Patent trolling

Slashdot seems to have uncovered proof that Microsoft has attempted to patent the iconic "Hot or Not" system.

According to Microsoft Patent number 20090150203 proves that it invented "hot or not". Microsoft calls it an "online personal appearance advisor and the patent covers the architecture for providing feedback to a viewer and/or
contributor on fashion and other personal appearance decisions that the contributor desires."

According to the the patent the contributor uploads self images for viewing and rating by viewers who choose provide an opinion on different fashion and/or cosmetic looks of the contributor. The contributor takes images show the contributor presented with a  number of different fashion choices. The snapshots can then be processed for upload to a website or other accessible location by one or more viewers.

Hot or not has been around for years, but this patent was only awarded on June 11. Apparently Patrick Baudisch, Daniel Liebling and Sridhar Srinivasan; Sridhar had a blinding flash of inspiration and came up with the idea. Perhaps they were inspired by what they saw on the web.
