Musk promises Twitter will get end-to-end encryption

Along with our jet packs, and personal robots

Supreme Twit Elon [look at me] Musk has reached the point in his control of Twitter where he is making promises about the technology in the hope we will believe them.

Musk promised that we would all have affordable robots by the end of 2022, when he meant we would see a robot which did not fall over which cost more than Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Musk's latest promise is to bring end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for direct messages on Twitter. This will enable right wingers to secretly plan their shoot outs of gay bars, mosques and schools, in the safety that it will be that much harder for the cops to form a viable case against them.

This is old technology. Other messaging platforms, such as Signal, Threema, WhatsApp, iMessage, Wire, Tox, and Keybase, already support encryption for messages, so it is probably fair enough that Musk should use it.

However, over last week it was revealed that a streaming video of the New Zealand Mosque Massacre was placed on Twitter and shared among those who like that sort of thing. Under Twitter's previous owners attempts to put it up were discovered and quickly pulled, however under Musk's new rules it was up there for a few days and required the New Zealand government to get on the blower to tell them to pull it.

NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the uploading of the videos ran contrary to Twitter’s commitment to the Christchurch Call, an international agreement between countries and tech companies to eliminate online hate.

The use of encryption and one to one sharing will make it difficult to stop the sharing of such content. Although we are assuming that a work force of developers which has been stripped to the bone can create that sort of software that quickly.

Musk meanwhile touted that new user signups to the social media platform are at an "all-time high," averaging over two million per day in the last seven days as of 16 November, up 66 per cent compared to the same week in 2021. Twitter has over 253.8 million monetisable daily active users (mDAU), he said. However, he did not say how many of these new users had opposable thumbs.
