High-end VR/MR headset priced at $1,499.99

At its Meta Connect event, the company unveiled its latest VR device, the Quest Pro VR headset, a high-end VR device aimed at enterprise market.

Based on Qualcomm's new Snapdragon XR2+ platform, the Meta Quest Pro is positioned as a high-end VR device, featuring a whole new design, high-res sensors, better displays, and more.

High-end hardware for high-end VR device

The Meta Quest Pro can be considered as Meta Quest 2 on steroids, especially on the hardware side, as we are looking at Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ platform, promising 50% more power than Meta Quest 2, as well as pacaking 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and 10 high res sensors, five inside the headset and five on the outside, all to bring the best possible VR experience.

Another big improvement is the displays, which now switch from Fresnel lenses to thin pancake optics that fold light several times over, reducing the depth of the optical module by 40%. The LCD displays use local dimming and quantum dot technology, as well as specialized backlight hardware, to offer better color reproduction and 75 percent more contrast.

In terms of numbers, you are looking at 37% more pixels per inch and 10% greater pixels per degree than Meta Quest 2, as well as a 25% improvement in full-field visual sharpness in the center view, 50% improvement in the peripheral region, and 1.3X larger color gamut than Meta Quest 2.

A whole new design and self-tracking controllers

Meta completely redesigned the headset, aiming to make the "slimmest and most balanced VR device". It features a continuous lens spacing adjustment mechanism, accommodating inter-pupillary distances (IPDs) between 55mm and 75mm, as well as allowing users to adjust the lens distance from their eyes with a new eye relief dial to optimize fit, face tracking, and viewing experience.

The new Meta Quest Pro controllers, which are called the Meta Quest Touch Pro controllers, feature three built-in sensors in each controller to track their position in 3D space independent of the headset, giving you a full 360-degree range of motion.

These also feature upgraded haptics using our new TruTouch Haptics system.

Better cameras for mixed reality

Meta Quest Pro also gets an all-new sensor architecture with high-res outward-facing cameras that capture 4X more pixels, offering full-color mixed reality experience.

As mentioned, we are looking at 10 sensors, five on the headset and five on the outside.

"The mixed reality on Meta Quest Pro lets you combine your physical environment with virtual elements in a realistic way, leading to enhanced social presence, productivity, and collaboration. Instead of being confined to the dimensions of your desk, you can set up a big virtual workspace with multiple screens spread all around you while still using your physical keyboard and mouse in productivity apps like Immersed, Arkio, and Gravity Sketch."

Meta Quest 2 is here to stay

Meta was keen to note that launching the Meta Quest Pro does not mean that the Meta Quest 2 will be discontinued. The Meta Quest 2 is here to stay and it caters to a whole different market, with the Quest Pro going for a high-end enterprise market.

Meta needed a way to justify the high-end hardware, and the high-end price, of the Meta Quest Pro, and only time will tell if this was the right way to go.
