AT&T has been investing a lot of time, money and effort into improving coverage and capacity in the metropolitan New York area. Since late 2008 and early 2009, the company has added 75 new cell sites to improve coverage and capacity.

According to information we have uncovered major additions were made across metro New York, New Jersey, and Long Island during a fifteen-month period. The upgrades were necessary due to increased usage as well an increase in demand for data services.

The increase in data services demand on AT&T can be traced to increased numbers of iPhones as well as BlackBerry devices. AT&T was often the victim of criticism over poor coverage in New York City. Our sources tell us that the performance increases should be especially noticeable in certain areas where coverage was previously limited or there was no data coverage at all. According to our source, areas of metropolitan New York present some of the most difficult terrain for effective and problem-free cell coverage.
