Not 17-inch as rumoured

AppleInsider has managed to secure some solid facts about the new budget iMac for schools which is available from the Apple Store for Education Institutions and it turns out that it won't have a 17-inch display as the rumours suggested, as instead it'll get a 20-inch display.

At US$899 (€676/£604), it's quite a bargain at first, as the retail 20-inch iMac will set you back $1,149, but taking a closer look at the specs reveals that it's not as good as it seems. For starters the Core 2 Duo processor is clocked at a mere 2GHz, compared to 2.66GHz for the retail version. You also only get 1GB of RAM as standard and a tiny 160GB hard drive.

The rest of the specs seem to be similar with the Nvidia 9400M chipset and an 8x DVD writer, sorry SuperDrive in Apple speak. It seems outright stingy by Apple to only supply 1GB of RAM considering how cheap memory is and most schools would have to upgrade this either prior to purchase or at a later stage.

Still, it's cheaper than buying the retail model and it seems like Apple feels that students doesn't need a powerful computer at school.
