Omid Mirsayafi, a 29-year-old Iranian blogger jailed last month for insulting the country's clerics, has died in Tehran's Evan prison.

Prison officials told his lawyer Mohammad Ali Dadkhah that Mirsayafi had committed suicide. Ali Dadkhah demanded an immediate inquiry into the matter, and Iranian authorities refused to comment the issue.

The International Campaign for Human Rights claims one of Mirsayafi's fellow inmates with medical training had warned prison officials about his poor state, claiming the young man suffered from severe depression.

Mirsayafi was sentenced to 30 months in prison for insulting Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other clerics.
