1.5TB model for $149

In an attempt to go green like the rest of the IT world, Samsung has recently announced the introduction of its Spinpoint F2EG EcoGreen hard disk family, which boasts up to 1.5TB of storage capacity across just three 500GB disk platters and which potentially opens up a door for the production of 2TB drives.

“Lower platter count means less power to start the motor, less power to continuously spin the motor and a lighter head-stack which takes less power to seek,” said Andy Higginbotham, director of HDD sales and marketing for the Samsung Semiconductor Storage Division. “With fewer heads and disks, the F2EG hard drive has a lower probability of head-disk failures, enabling customers to build more reliable systems.”

The lower component count on the F2EG ultimately brings 40 percent lower idle power consumption to the table, as well as 45 percent more power efficiency when in use. Behind this low-power, low-heat, low-noise solution is Samsung's proprietary Eco-Triangle technology. Samsung states that this technology is capable of providing more energy efficiency and higher performance hard drive alternatives for manufacturers of external drives, home media PCs, set-top boxes, and a variety of other solutions.

Not only is this family of drives more efficient, but it is also safer for health purposes. According to Samsung, the F2EG drive complies with RoHs regulations as well as with other environmental regulations.

Samsung Spinpoint F2EG SATA II drives will be made in 500GB, 1TB, and 1.5TB versions with 16MB and 32MB cache configurations, and will support AHCI specifications. Samsung claims 8.9ms average seek times, 5.52ms average latencies and 140MB/s media to buffer transfer speeds.

The new family of drives is currently being shipped to major OEM businesses, and the 1.5TB model is currently available at an MSRP of $149.
