From Russia with love

A rather nasty virus is still causing havoc in Royal Navy ships and RAF bases, which were hit two weeks ago, and still have no email.

The MoD claims its operations were not affected, but doesn't have a clue as to how the virus came to breach its security software. RAF personnel are reportedly struggling to communicate with other sites via email, and some are apparently using paper and ink instead.

There's some speculation concerning the origin of the virus. Conservative MP Mark Pritchard says the virus has redirected email traffic to a Russian server, but the MoD claims it has no evidence that it came from Russia. Either Pritchard was fed some lousy info by someone at the MoD who thinks the Cold War is still on, or the MoD is keeping quiet untill all the facts are in.

An spokeswoman says the MoD is taking action to clean up the mess and protect its systems from re-infection. That's what they said last week, too, and they don't seem to have made much progress.
