Ajit wants to slice up the Pai

The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday issued rules for bidding on high-band spectrum that will be used to create the next generation of 5G wireless networks.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said that bidding will begin on the 28 GHz band on Nov. 14, with the 24GHz licences going up for auction immediately afterward.

Carriers have spent billions of dollars to buy spectrum and to develop and test 5G networks, which are expected to cut data delivery times to less than one-thousandth of a second from one one-hundredth of a second in 4G networks, the FCC has said.

5G will be an important technological milestone providing shedloads of bandwidth to stream lots of different devices. It is also a money spinner for the governments too which make a lot of dosh selling off the necessary radio spectrum.

While the FCC has a lot of experience in spectrum sales, this one will be interesting as it is being conducted under Pai who has so far shown no desire to stand up to the telco monopolies. Smart money suggests that the US telcos will not end up paying as much as counterparts in Europe under the new regime.
