Wii tops hottest ‘must have’ electronics items
While all of the figures from Black Friday and weekend sales have yet to be released, most retailers are encouraged by sales that should top last year. While some were disappointed with the Black Friday retail sales offerings, it did not seem to matter, as many still braved early morning queues to take advantage of deals.
The must have items, according to early reports, were products in the electronics arena, led by the Nintendo Wii and the Wii Fit, while the exceptional deals on Blu-ray disc players from a variety of sources also did better than excepted. LCD TVs also sold well with a variety of deals to be had in most size ranges.
As is a normal Black Friday tradition, laptop computers were in strong demand; however, the number and amount of real deals on laptops were questionable. Apple, as we predicted, offered the older MacBook at $899 and according to a retailer we spoke with, sales were brisk on the older model.
Speaking of Apple, the company also saw brisk sales of the iPod Touch as well as the new iPod Nano. Apple will likely once again lead the sales for Black Friday in the MP3 player category, even though a variety of competing MP3 player manufacturers had very good deals. Reports suggest that consumers remained largely uninterested in non-Apple MP3 player products.
Microsoft is expected to report a surge in sales of the Xbox 360 over the Black Friday weekend, with a variety of retailers offering excellent deals on the console system. The majority of the deals were done as retailers offered bundle packages that offered additional titles or even Guitar Hero as part of the deal.
One of the best reported deals on the Xbox 360 was, in fact, at Best Buy where shoppers could purchase the Xbox 360 Pro system with two additional included games beyond the two game holiday bundled titles included with the unit. Excellent deals from a variety of retailers on Xbox 360 software were to be had just about everywhere with recent titles being slashed for as much as half off for the Black Friday special sales.
The electronics sales numbers could be good news for retailers that expected sales to be down over the Black Friday weekend. Some retailers are already holding out hope that the sales numbers could be building momentum going into the final weeks of the season.
