Will use new software to seek out bandwidth hogs

Comcast has announced its latest revamped plan to deal with customers they believe are using too much bandwidth. This move comes after they came under serious fire from the FCC over their first plan which involved blocking access to some sites.

The new plan of attack from Comcast will use software that will analyze the traffic usage of consumers on their network, seeking out consumers that are using more than their fair share of bandwidth. Once these users have been isolated using this software, then the software will downgrade their level of service and the users may have their traffic delayed.

The strategy is a quality of service based strategy from what we can tell, but the focus is to make sure that all users are getting their fair share of the available bandwidth. The plan is to have the new system in place by the end of the year.

ISPs are still complaining that some users are just hogging the available bandwidth and using much more than their fair share of the available resources. Companies such as Comcast hope that this effort will make users more responsible with their bandwidth usage, but many feel that this is nothing more than an effort for ISPs in the U.S. to move away from their unlimited usage pricing model.
