November sales number go to Xbox One

Breaks Sony’s 10 month grip on the top spot

Microsoft did it in November. As we have already suspected the NPD’s numbers show that the Xbox One broke the stranglehold that Sony has had on the top sales spot with the PlayStation 4. A $50 price cut with a number of aggressive promotions helped push the Xbox One into the lead for November.

Microsoft who has not had a lot to brag about lately was happy to announce that the in November the Xbox One set a record for the sales of the console in North America and the UK.

Microsoft isn’t attributing the sales success to the $50 price drop and aggressive marketing, but instead thinks the response to the holiday game lineup on the Xbox One was the deciding factor for many buyers. (We think that the price drop that saw the price slashed as much as $70 on Black Friday had more to do with the sales than one might think, but that is our take on the situation.)

The next question has to be what Sony will do to respond. A respected industry analyst we spoke with told us, “Sony might not regret lowering their base price for the console, but given the lead that they have in consoles sold the momentum from this tactical decision could lead to a total holiday sales victory for Microsoft. Given some of the other things going on at Sony, they must believe that they still have the upper hand and I don’t see any signs of panic yet. Many of the Xbox One consoles sold were not purchased by the main player of the console and the decision to go with the Xbox One could have been a strictly money decision. “
