IBM and Apple reveal new apps

Apps for banking, retail, insurance and more

The fruits of IBM’s alliance with the fruity cargo cult Apple have started to ripen.

The pair [surely pear. Ed] have released 10 business apps aimed at businesses in six industries as well as government users.

The Tame Apple press is claiming that the apps are proof that Oracle, Microsoft, Amazon, Cisco, SAP and all the others might as well surrender before the might of Apple and Biggish Blue.

The apps target users in the banking, retail, insurance, financial services, telecommunications and airline industries, however they appear to have a decidedly consumer edge.

For example one of the apps, for example, allows a flight crew to personalize a passenger’s in-flight experience. An app targeted at the banking industry allows a financial advisor to remotely access and manage a client’s portfolio so they can provide consulting in venues outside of an office. Police officers can use iPhones to view video feeds from crime scenes with an app for law enforcement. Customers using the apps include Air Canada, Sprint and financial and banking services firm Citi.

Nevertheless, IBM claims that the apps are using smart technologies to unlock new value at the intersection of big data and individual engagement.

When IBM and Apple announced their partnership in July, the media claimed that the deal would allow s IBM to apply its deep enterprise technology experience to Apple consumer-friendly products.

IBM was expected to resell Apple devices with its software pre-installed. IBM activation, management and security software are also involved in the deal. The partnership was supposed to give Apple credibility it lacked within corporates.

More cynical types suggested that it would mean that IBM sales teams would be flogging products that they did not understand to businesses that did not want them.
