Amazon has purchased Twitch

by on26 August 2014

No longer more than just a rumor

Amazon has purchased Twitch for $970 million dollars. The deal will see Amazon grow its streaming media presence with the purchase of the gaming oriented streaming provider. The buyout will take place later this year.

Twitch CEO Emmett Shear has confirmed the Amazon buyout and has gone on to say that they choose Amazon because they believe in the Twitch community and share the company’s long term vision. In addition Shear says that everything will stay pretty much the same and that includes the employees and the brand. Most importance, Twitch will apparently continue to be independent from Amazon, but with the power offered by Amazon’s data infrastructure, the Twitch experience will improve.

It is difficult to say what else might change for Twitch, but we suspect that support for the Amzon Fire TV platform will be one thing that Twitch will be heading toward. No additional information was announced as to other changes that may or may not be coming to other platforms in the future. It is too soon to say according to our sources, but we can see this as a big deal for Amazon long term.
