Recession? What recession?

Economic recession
seems to have passed the IT industry by, with shipments rising much faster than expected in the second quarter.

In the developed countries the numbers of computers shipped increased, thanks to falling prices while there had been a huge upswing in demand from emerging markets. According to Gartner, worldwide shipments increased 16 percent from a year ago to 71.9 million PCs. Its fortune tellers had predicted that there would only be a 11.2 percent growth.

Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa claims most of the sales boom was in among laptops and punters tried to get more mobile. He said the reason his prediction was so far off was because he had not seen how economic jitters in mature markets would positively affect PC shipments in the quarter.

He thought that mortgage and credit market turmoil in the U.S. would slow sales, but they actually pushed down PC average selling prices, sparking a 4.2 percent increase in U.S. shipments.
