Xbox One is 4K Ready

by on09 August 2013

HDMI 1.4 spec cable included in the box

During the Major Nelson Xbox One unboxing video, Microsoft announced that the Xbox One would come with an HDMI 1.4 specification rated cable that supports 4K or Ultra HD, if you will. As part of the 1.4 specification the cable is able to do 1080p, 3D, and 4K which is baked into the specs.

Also, what we know about the 4K support is that the Xbox One will be able to transmit full 4K resolution content to a compatible display over HDMI using this cable. What it does not say is if Microsoft is working on 4K content or if gaming will be able to be upscaled to 4K output.

We suspect that this 4K or Ultra HD support is in for the future and it isn’t something Microsoft is really thinking that hard about now. We think the 4K content would be restricted to media content only, and it is unlikely that the Xbox One would offer 4K game support. We will have to see how this sorts itself out in the future, as we doubt that even Microsoft knows what all it might do with this 4K support as it is calling it.
