Pay if you use too much

One of the U.S.'s largest ISPs has started metering some of its customers and will start charging them if they go over certain usage limits. Time Warner's punters in Beaumont, Texas, will have monthly allowances for the amount of data they upload and download. Those who go over will be charged $1 per gigabyte.

Kevin Leddy, Time Warner Cable's Executive Vice President of Advanced Technology, said that five percent of the company's subscribers were using half of the capacity on local cable lines. Any money raised by the charge will be used to finance the needed investment in the infrastructure.

While this will all be familiar to Interweb users in Europe, metered usage of the Internet has not been seen in the U.S. Currently, ISPs first warn users over heavy usage and then cut them off if they are ignored.
