Hewlett-Packard Company has been ordered by a judge to pay Cornell University $184 million for patent infringement on processor technology used to boost computing speed, according to a lawyer for the University.

Federal Judge Randall Raider handed down the verdict in the U.S. District Court in New York after finding that patents of the University had been infringed by HP.

Cornell University filed the action against HP in 2001, requesting $575 million in damages.  The damages asked for were for HP servers and workstations that were built between 1996 and 2006 by HP, the period of the patent infringement.
