2012 Back Friday Coverage Starts

by on16 November 2012

What is the hottest deal this time around?

While the majority of the Black Friday ads have now been leaked online, we have been combing through them and researching the specifications and pricing to compare pricing and abilities to find our picks this year for the best of the best in Black Friday values. Over the next week we will be telling you about some of the items we have selected and why they should be at the top of your list this Black Friday.

As we have been looking over the ads, one thing is VERY apparent this year; and that is if you still have not taken the plunge and purchased that flash screen HDTV or that second HDTV you have been looking at, this is the year to do it. Some of the best deals that we have scoped out so far are on the HDTVs in a number of sizes and configurations for all kinds of uses. We’ve seen options from replacement of that big set in the living room to an extra small set in the kids’ bedroom for them to hook up to their video game systems.

Also, as with last year, we have seen software for video game systems, DVD, and Blu-ray players that will again be some of the best deals buyers can get. Speaking of video gaming systems and Blu-ray players, once again this year we will see special Black Friday-only deals on video gaming systems that are not the Wii U, and off-brand and older model Blu-ray players dipping to prices slightly below $40, which is a price that we never thought we would see.

Just to whet your appetite a little, we call your attention to our pick as the best buy in the HDTVs in the 50” to 55” size range, as well as our pick for the best of the best Black Friday laptops.

After looking at all of the HDTVs in the 50” to 55” size range for the Black Friday deals this year, we have to tell you that there are a number of deals; and while we liked Samsung and Proscan models that were a bit more expensive, our choice would be the Toshiba 50L2200U at Sears. The 50L2200U is a nice 1080p LED (Yes, that’s right LED… not LCD) set that offers a number of inputs, and while it only has 2 HDMI inputs and a 60Hz refresh rate, we can overlook that when you see the $299 price tag. By way of comparison, Best Buy is selling the same set in their Black Friday offerings for $100 more.

When it comes to laptops and Black Friday, it seems that every year everyone is looking for a deal on one, but many times they end up with a unit that needs more dollars in upgrades to make it usable than it is worth. No problem this year, our pick is rock solid; and except for the fact that it is pink colored and might not appeal to some, in our opinion it is the best of the best in the Black Friday Laptop offerings.

Our pick for the Black Friday laptop goes to Best Buy with the Asus X401a-bhpdn37 at $249 with a 2.4Ghz B980 Pentium dual-core processor with 4GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, wireless 802.11b/g/n, USB 3.0, and Windows 8. It is in our opinion the best of what you can get in a low-cost laptop that can perform. While it only has a 6-cell battery and that matte pink finish and it discards the DVD drive, in our opinion it still delivers the most bang for the buck of anything out there.

Stay tuned when we take a look at the video game consoles and software deals for Black Friday on Monday when we will keep looking at the deals for the upcoming post-Thanksgiving Black Friday.
