Heads will roll

Top U.K. bureaucrats will be held personally responsible if their department loses or mishandles personal data.

The move is part of a measure designed to increase data security in the U.K. They mean that Whitehall permanent secretaries and chief executives of NHS trusts will be forced to take data protection "much more seriously."

The Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas, said that the new measures focused on "issues of accountability and governance."
