And a 19-inch square model

NEC has announced a pair of new small sized 120Hz LCD panels which could very well find their way into computer displays in the near future, all depending on cost and interest from display manufacturers, of course.

The one most people will get excited about is the 22.5-inch widescreen model with a 1,920x1,200 resolution, as this would be ideal for both gaming, movies and general computer usage. This is also the smallest panel to date to feature full HD resolution to our knowledge, as you normally have to go up to a 24-inch model to get this resolution. It also features 10-bit color and can as such display up to 1073 million colors per pixel.

The 19-inch model uses a 4:3 aspect ratio and has a resolution of 1,280x1,024, which is standard for this type of display, although this is still a popular resolution for people that don't like widescreen displays.

By going up from 60 to 120Hz, things like motion blur should be vastly reduced and this might actually be the first LCD panel accepted by many hard core gamers who are still using CRT monitors. The 22.5-inch model features a brightness of 460cd/m2 with the 19-inch model being slightly less bright at 300cd/m2. Both panels feature a contrast ratio of 800:1.

Now we're just crossing our fingers and hoping that displys based on these new panels won't be too expensive and that they'll turn up sooner rather than later.
