Seeks to benefit from Pre-Olympics sales

Japan’s mobile phone manufacturer Sharp Corporation has announced that it is targeting China’s population for sales of mobile phones in anticipation of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  This market space is being abandoned by cell phone maker, Kyocera, which could not compete with the low-priced mobile phones from Motorola and Nokia.

Sharp is renown for its well-made, high-tech mobile phone parts, including LCD panels and high-quality small mobile cameras, and indicated that sales in China could start as soon as this June.  Local interest in the upcoming Summer Olympics is high, and many consumers will likely purchase new mobile phones or upgrade their phones to a better model prior to attending Olympic events. The Beijing Olympics start on September 7th.

Sharp indicated that it was its belief that China’s consumers would opt to spend a bit more for its products to get optimum image quality and parts performance in light of the significance of the upcoming Olympic events.
