Second Life silliness

Dell's environmental publicity stunt of giving away free trees in Second Life seems to have backfired.

The hardware maker is giving away free virtual trees inside the virtual community. User can plant the trees on private land and determine the pace at which they grow.

For each tree planted, Dell solicits donations from computer buyers to plant real trees. However Dell's publicity seems to think that virtual tree planting does not hard the environment.

However the more virtual planting which goes on in Second Life the more the software requires computer power to grow. Thus Dell's stunt increasing Second Life's carbon emissions.

The company has been blasted on various blogs and forums for divorcing environmentalism from reality.
