Micron launches new solid state drive family

Micron
has jump into the solid state drive pool with the launch of its new family of solid state NAND storage solutions. The new family of SSD drives will be called “RealSSD” and will be offered a variety of sizes and form factors. Micron has seen the interest in SSD storage solutions growing and believes that they can fulfill the needs for SSD that all segments of the market have.

The problem with SSD has been size and price. The prices have been quite high and the sizes are not as large as traditional hard drive storage solutions. The SSD continue to have an advantage in speed, reliability, and power consumption, but they have been slow to catch on, mainly due to price and size.

Micron expects to have the RealSSD products shipping in volume during the first quarter of 2008. No specifics on pricing were announced, but it is safe to assume that Micron will be competitive with the other players in this arena.
