Only for hardcore gamers

Danish gaming accessory maker, SteelSeries, has released its latest keyboard, the SteelSeries 7G and we have to say that it looks rather unusual. It is targeting professional and competitive gamers, so mere mortals need not apply.

SteelSeries claims that it features the most advanced PS/2 buffer system ever created for a gaming keyboard, as it allows you to press all the keys on the keyboard simultaneously without causing what is known as ghosting. Each key has a mechanical switch and is gold plated with 18K gold, and they're meant to last some 50 million operations.

The keyboard features a PS/2 and USB port, as well as audio jacks. At the back of the keyboard there are ports for headphone and mic as well as a two port USB hub, but there's no mention whether or not this is USB 2.0. All the cables are braided and split apart only just before where you attach them to your PC. It also has a removable wrist rest, as you can see in the picture below, which we think looks a bit naff.

We found the following quote in the press release quite amusing:“Somewhere the industry took a wrong turn when it came to gaming peripherals. It became more important to add colorful lighting and features that have no impact on professional gaming, than to create high quality products, “ says Tino Soelberg, Head of R&D for SteelSeries. “With the 7G keyboard, SteelSeries is following our company line of no-BS / no-nonsense, and to deliver a product that does what it's supposed to do - help players perform better and faster in-game".

The 7G will be available in December and it has a MSRP of US$149.99 in the U.S., but as always the Europeans get stiffed; you can pre-order it now from SteelSeries for €129.99 or DKK999.00 plus shipping. It's available in U.S., Danish, German and French layout at the moment.
