Down for five days

More
than 165,000 Web sites were off-line for more than five days due to a bungled data centre move at NaviSite.

Users were warned that the site would be off-line for five hours while NaviSite, which bought Web hosting company Alabanza in August, moved Alabanza's servers. However it has taken five days so far and only 65 per cent of Alabanza's 850 servers were running yesterday.

According to CNet, the company encountered technical problems with migrating data to the new location. An online transfer was taking too long, so the company decided to physically move additional servers to save time, he said.

But then there were some synchronization problems involving Address Resolution Protocol requests, which interfered with the transfer of the data to the new servers. The servers were overwhelmed with traffic as thousands of customers checked whether their Web sites were back up.
