Speculation circulating like a late summer hurricane


Rumors have
been growing in the market that Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM), manufacturer of the Blackberry, is ripe for a takeover by Microsoft Corporation.

The general rationale provided for the speculation is that Microsoft could be interested in acquiring RIM to counter Google, Inc.’s recent announcement that Google is considering manufacturing its own mobile phone operating system and Google’s apparent intent to bid on the available analog 700MHz bandwidth that will be auctioned by the FCC in September.

The Microsoft takeover rumor is the latest suitor to be interested in RIM; Motorola, Inc. was previously named as being interested in acquiring RIM.

Both Microsoft and RIM declined to comment on the possibility.
