Software King of the World, Microsoft, has published a new support page explaining why it binned phone-based activation.
“Beginning December 3, 2025, the traditional telephone-based product activation automation process has been moved from telephone to online. The new digital workflow provides a more secure, reliable, and user-friendly activation experience and helps prevent fraud.”
Ring the old Windows activation number now, and you get a robotic voice telling you it is online-only, with a shove towards aka.ms/aoh.
It means the PC you want to activate does not have to be on the internet, but the activation does. You must use the product activation portal on a second device, such as a phone, tablet, or another PC with an internet connection.
A Microsoft account is required for the portal flow. It does not need to be linked to the Windows PC, which is generous by Redmond standards.
An earlier report dated 5 January 2026 said this was the final method for activating Windows without an internet connection. According to Neowin, telephone activation stopped working a few days before that report landed.
Microsoft did not make a major announcement at the time, and the telephone activation menu option in Windows remained. Users reported that it no longer worked and that the call now goes straight to a short recorded message.
Neowin said callers in the US hear this line: “Support for product activation has moved online. For the fastest and most convenient way to activate your product, please visit our online product activation portal at aka.ms/aoh”
A YouTube video from Ben Kleinberg shows the same experience, with the call ending in the same dead-end script. The button in Windows looks live, yet the phone tree is effectively a tombstone.
What makes this messier is Microsoft’s own paperwork still name-checking telephone activation. It is mentioned for Windows 11 and Windows 10, and it is still referenced for Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.
Telephone activation is even called out on a Microsoft support page, with no clear line saying it has been switched off.
