Sources inside AMD have unofficially indicated that AMD is preparing to launch its last processor in the Athlon 64 X2 family, the high-end desktop processor Athlon 64 X2 6400+. At the present AMD’s highest performing processor is the Athlon 64 X2 6000+, which will put AMD behind Intel when Intel launches its newest Core 2 Duo E6850.

The 6400+ will reportedly have a core frequency of 3.2GHz and 2MB L2 cache and will be priced in the range of US$220 to $248. The new processor will likely be ready to ship in the very near future.  AMD declined official comment on the new processor.
