HTC has confirmed that it is giving up on budget Android phones beginning this year. Instead, the company will focus on premium devices, which have a higher profit margin.

During its fourth quarter earnings call, HTC announced that it plans to exit the entry-level smartphone business this year as it begins to focus on high-margin, high-profit devices.

5.7-incher with secondary display and SD821

After an endless streak of rumors, HTC has now unveiled its new U Ultra smartphone, a 5.7-incher with a secondary 2.05-inch screen, powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 SoC and featuring the new Sense Companion assistant.

Cutting edge it isn’t

HTC has released its Desire 650 which has nearly identical specs to the Desire 630 that it announced in February 2016 and has a three-year-old same Snapdragon 400 chipset.

Shipment delays, price competition, slower sales

According to the latest claims from industry sources, the three leading Taiwan-based smartphone vendors Asustek, HTC and Acer have all missed their target smartphone shipments for 2016 due to price competition and lower-than-expected sales in certain countries.

A few days after CES

Over the weekend, HTC sent out invitations to a new product announcement it will be holding on January 12th, 2017, during the week following CES in Las Vegas.
