AMD slashes processor prices

Written by Fudzilla staff

Big cuts make way for Llano
Earlier this week AMD quietly introduced new processor pricing lists and consumers can look forward to significantly lower prices, particularly in the mid-range.

Athlon II prices have dropped between 2 and 25 percent depending on the SKU. The popular Athlon II X4 645 dropped from $112 to $102, while the energy efficient 605e dropped from $122 to $98, making it a rather good deal. Dual core Athlons saw cuts between 3 and 12 percent, while triple cores dropped between 5 and 25 percent.

There are quite a few bargains in the Phenom department as well. The dual-core 560 dropped from $102 to $90. The energy efficient quad-core 905e was slashed from $165 to just $100. Prices of all 9xx Black Edition parts dropped by more than 10 percent. There were also some cuts in the six-core range, and the flagship Phenom II X6 dropped from $239 to $205.

The price cuts don’t come as much of a surprise, as the introduction of Zambezi and Llano is drawing near. In any case some CPUs, particularly the energy efficient version, saw rather significant cuts. Coupled with AMD’s traditionally good value for money many of them are nothing short of bargains.

Llano then Zambezi soon.. Lets hope the leaks are wrong and Bulldozer can convincingly beat Sandybridge's 2600K, then we might see proper competition between AMD and Intel :)

the leaked (and to my eye fake) pcmark/3dmark slide shows bulldozer matching sandy bridge in ipc in pcmark vantage. pcmark doesn't scale beyond 4 threads, so it's 4 sandy bridge threads against 4 bulldozer ones. if it is real then bulldzozer matches sandy bridge in ipc per thread in this instance. considering that intel doesn't have a new mArch until haswell, this would possibly mean near parity for amd in instructions per cycle, per thread until at least 2013. of course amd also have a new mArch in the works, so we could see some real competition soon...

No no! lets hope the leaks are right, and buldozer is matching the 2600k IPC.

(intels best chip for that benchmark is the 2600k not the I7 980x)

Price cuts are always good news, and this will either lead to improved market share for AMD or Intel cutting prices. Everybody wins!
