Android tablet sales in Europe still disappointing

Written by

It was all an iFad
For months now we’ve been talking about overpriced Android tablets and the failure of Google and ARMdroid vendors to come up with competitive products that can deliver good value for money and stand toe to toe with Apple.

Sadly, it seems we were spot on. According to Register’s Paul Kunert, non-Apple tablets are piling up in warehouses and very few people are choosing to pick one up, despite the hype. Of course, high prices might have something to do with the fact that retailers are moving Android tablets like tired snails returning from a funeral. Recent price cuts don’t seem to be helping, either.

According to channel analyst Context, non-Apple tablet sales were slow across the board, in all parts of Europe, regardless of the OS. HP managed to move about 15,000 TouchPads in Europe last month, while Acer and Asus managed to ship just 8,000 and 7,000 tablets. Apple apparently managed to sell about 160,000 iPads in the same timeframe. To make matters worse, shipments in the first week of August actually slowed down.

Context’s Salman Chaudhry claims that only the iPad is selling well, while inventories of all other tablets are piling up.

"There is a mountain of surplus tablets in the channel," one distributor told the Reg. "They are just not shifting."

So for all the hype from vendors, Google and ARM chipmakers, it appears that Apple really doesn’t have much to worry about. The advent of 28nm chips, quad-core ARMs, new Android variants and possibly Windows 8 could start to turn things around sometime next year, but only if Apple by some chance manages to gamble away its lead. Judging by past experience, it won’t.

Unsurprising.

There's nothing wrong with the current slew of Android tablets, aside from being tablets.

It's a well-established fact that Android and iOS users have vastly different purchasing habits and with that in mind I doubt Android tablets would sell even if they were more powerful and/or cheaper.

And who is suprised by that? There still simply is no real use-case for tablets as there is non for ultrabooks. It is a waste and nVidia will sink along with the whole tablet hype into oblivion. Thanks to their arrogant management

It is difficult to count the Android devices. Many are buying cheaper tablets from ebay.
What the above numbers suggest is that they have to stop charging like Apple and lower the prices on Android models. You can't ask $500 or more for an Android tablet. It is too much. $350 is more logical. For example I would think a fair price for ASUS Transformer is $399 WITH the extra keyboard. Because $150 for a keyboard and an extra battery as a package it is just crazy. I bet they could sell it for half the price and still make money from it. And $100 for a 16GB upgrade... Come on. You are NOT Apple. And with these prices you will never be.

Android tablets are overpriced. There's no way I was going to buy one for $500-400. But I did get a used one for $200 and I completely happy with it. I use it to browse internet, watch movies/videos and read books. All without the need to get out of bed. And that's pretty much all I need from a tablet. So, I think if the price is right, the tablets will sell; $200 and lower is about the right price for any tablet.

i think the tab manufactures also include the cost of android on their devices(in whatever way you want to interpret it)! .Its time when they have to leave out the imagined development cost since all they do is attach a few pieces of HW and u have an tablet,no tablet should cost than more than 200$

I think Samsung Tab 10.1 will get the job done after the court approved selling it again in Europe ..
