With reduced functionality

It was almost bound to happen, as judging by Nvidia's Intel chipset roadmap, the company only has high-end and entry-level chipset available on en-route, but from what we've been told, Nvidia is working on a cheaper version of the 790i chipset.

The new version is meant to come with a more basic southbridge and will as such only support a pair of x16 PCIe 2.0 slots, rather than a total of three PCIe x16 slots, of which the third one is PCIe 1.0 as in the current implementations.

We would also guess that Nvidia will put in some limitations on memory support so it won't compete with its more expensive 790i chipsets, but this is just speculation as this moment in time. We're not sure what other limitations this new chipset will have compared to the current two models, but a lower price might give it a much broader appeal.

This might also be an interim solution until the MCP7A-SLI arrives, although we have a feeling that this chipset will be targeting yet another market segment, as it only has dual x8 PCIe 2.0 slots.
