Comes in early 2009

AMD is working hard on a new chipset codenamed RD890 and this chipset will have support for upcoming 45nm star cores.

AMD new start cores will feature support for DDR3 memory and they will use socket AM3. The chipset itself will interconnect with SB800 Southbridge.

RD890 is a desktop discrete chipset and it doesn’t come with integrated graphics. It is supposed to replace AMD 790FX boards out there. It looks like AMD did a good job by not rushing to adopt DDR3 till early 2009, as the prices have started falling, and by early 2009 they just might be at the right level to make people consider buying the DDR3.

We still don’t know anything about the SB800 features, but we expect that it should be better than SB750. We also know that soon-to-be-launched SB750 has all the features of SB700 Southbridge + Raid 5 support.
